About Samsung Galaxy

The Galaxy A22 is the LTE sibling of the Galaxy A22 5G, which we previously reviewed. Although the two were officially unveiled together in June, we have only just had a chance to examine the LTE model.

A fast 90Hz AMOLED display, a flexible quad-camera system, and a sizable 5,000mAh battery are just a few of the advantages of the Galaxy A22 LTE’s low price.

That’s a strong foundation, albeit not quite on par with some of its higher-numbered siblings.

Samsung Galaxy A22 Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Solidly built
  • Decent main camera
  • Strong stamina

Cons

  • Mediocre LCD tech
  • Poor performance
  • Hefty build

Design and Screen

  • Solid but heavy body
  • 6.6-inch FHD+ TFT LCD
  • 90Hz refresh rate

The basic look of the Samsung Galaxy A22 5G follows the broad design template of other such as the Galaxy A32 5G and the Galaxy A52 5G, are A-series mobile devices. However, there are some very small variations.

The body is made of the same familiar plastic with a curved metal-effect rim, but there are odd ridges close to the front and back edges. Like those other phones, this one has a back made of plastic that has a glass-like appearance, but it is matte rather than shiny.

You can choose between Grey, White, and Violet finishes in terms of color. My model is available in the silky white finish, which guarantees that, at the very least, those greasy fingerprints won’t be visible.

Performance

  • MediaTek Dimenisty 700 pretty slow
  • 4GB RAM
  • 64GB storage somewhat stingy

The Samsung Galaxy A22 5G runs on a somewhat limited a meager 4GB of RAM and a MediaTek Dimensity 700 processor. It isn’t much of a step back from the Samsung Galaxy A32 5G and its Dimensity 720, with some parts of the Dimensity 700 even proving faster, but the Dimensity 720 wasn’t exactly a strong performer either.

A typical Geekbench 5 multi-core score of 1744 places it in the same league as its stablemate, along with devices like the Redmi Note 11, and comfortably behind devices like the Realme 9 5G that use the more widely used Snapdragon 695.

In the hand, the A22 5G feels just fine. There are occasional pauses that I noticed, such as when switching from the home screen to Google Feed, but overall it moves along with enough fluidity to live up to expectations at this end of the market.

You will have to deal with a relative lack of storage, however, as the starting point of 64GB is far less than the 128GB we see elsewhere at this price. That’s a little disappointing.

On the software front, Samsung has kept its budget phone largely current. It was updated to Android 12 and OneUI 4.1 from Android 11 and OneUI 3.1 when it first debuted.

Samsung’s software will be well-known to most people. Although a little heavy, it is fully functional and incredibly reliable. Few manufacturers give you as much precise control over features like battery optimization and customization options, even if the interface sometimes feels a little too invasive in comparison to more stock Android options.

Camera

  • Accomplished 48MP main camera
  • Limited 5MP ultra-wide
  • 8MP selfie camera creates some anomalies

Samsung has equipped the Galaxy A22 5G with a familiar camera set-up made up of three distinct sensors. There is a 48MP wide camera, a 5MP ultra-wide camera, and an unnecessary 2MP depth sensor.

The primary 48MP sensor is by far the most capable of the three and appears to be the same as the Galaxy A32 5G’s. Similar to that slightly more expensive phone, this sensor captures bright, sharp, well-exposed images in reasonable lighting.

A strong camera for the money is produced by Samsung thanks to its clever algorithms and hard-earned camera expertise. The main sensor’s ability to isolate subjects with sharp edges and a pleasantly natural amount of background bokeh impressed me.

Battery Life

  • 5000 mAh battery
  • 15W charging
  • An hour charging to 58%

The Samsung Galaxy A22 5G packs a large (though these days pretty normal) 5000mAh battery, much like the A32 Galaxy from Samsung.

Naturally, it also has a Full HD display to push, in contrast to the Galaxy A32 5G. However, those extra pixels don’t seem to have any impact on the phone’s endurance, and the Galaxy A22 5G will easily last two full days of moderate use.

Even under more rigorous use, it holds up. Running the demanding 3DMark Wild Life Stress Test benchmark for an hour straight consumed 11% of a charge, which is a respectable result and exactly the same as the Galaxy A32 5G managed to achieve.

Similar to the Galaxy A32 5G, a 15W charger is included. Although it isn’t particularly quick, the fact that a charger is included at all is good for a Samsung phone.

I found that half an hour of charging would get the A22 5G from 0 to 29%, while a full hour got it up to 58%.

Final Words on Samsung Galaxy A22 Review

The Samsung Galaxy A22 5G is a predictably solid affordable phone with a strong main camera and exemplary stamina.

Its performance falls short of expectations; even for a low-cost phone, it seems a little sluggish and creaky. While the phone as a whole feels a little large and heavy, the display is dull and lacks vibrancy.

The good news is that given its age, you’ll probably be able to find the Galaxy A22 5G for much less than RRP, and Samsung’s ongoing software support means that it still represents a good value.
